Bishop Michael Boulette

The life and ministry of Most Reverend Michael J. Boulette, D. Min. unfolds as a journey marked by deep faith and dedicated service to the Church. His story took a momentous turn when Pope Francis appointed Msgr. Michael Boulette as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio on January 23, 2017.

Prior to this significant role, Bishop Boulette served as a parochial vicar in two parishes and was appointed to the Assumption Seminary faculty as Director of Spiritual & Liturgical Formation.  He then served as pastor of Notre Dame Catholic Church, Kerrville, Texas for 18 years. His pastoral leadership reached beyond parish walls. As the Founder and Director of St. Peter Upon the Water: A Center for Spiritual Direction and Formation located in Ingram near Kerrville which began in 2004, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to guiding others in their spiritual journeys.

Bishop Boulette was born in Hudson Falls, New York, but much of his youth was spent in Fredericksburg, Texas where he attended St. Mary’s School. At just fourteen years old, he entered St. John’s Seminary, guided by a sense of vocation that would shape the course of his life. His academic pursuits were as impressive as his spiritual ones, earning him Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Psychology, a Master of Divinity Degree for Ministry from the University of Notre Dame, and a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching and Worship from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

The pivotal moment of his ministry came with his priestly ordination on March 19, 1976, the Feast of St. Joseph, and later, his ordination as Bishop on March 20, 2017 also the Feast of St. Joseph that year. Throughout his years within the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Bishop Boulette embraced both pastoral care and administration. He undertook significant responsibilities as Moderator of the Curia and Vicar General, while also making his mark as a sought-after retreat presenter and parish mission speaker, touching countless lives with his insight and compassion.

On September 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette upon his reaching the age of seventy-five, as required by canon law. Bishop Boulette had submitted his resignation on June 4, 2025.  Following his retirement, Bishop Boulette has returned to ministry at St. Peter Upon the Water in Ingram.
