Our "Toastee," Bishop Michael Boulette
Most Reverend Michael J. Boulette, D.Min., was born in Hudson Falls, New York, and spent much of his youth in Fredericksburg, Texas, where he attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. Responding to the call to the priesthood at an early age, he entered St. John’s Seminary at just fourteen years old. He went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology, a Master of Divinity from the University of Notre Dame, and a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching and Worship from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1976, the Feast of St. Joseph, and began his ministry serving as a parochial vicar in two parishes before joining the faculty of Assumption Seminary as Director of Spiritual and Liturgical Formation.
Bishop Boulette later served as pastor of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Kerrville, Texas, for 18 years. In 2004, he founded St. Peter Upon the Water, a center for spiritual direction and formation in Ingram, Texas, demonstrating his enduring commitment to accompanying others in their spiritual journeys. On January 23, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and he was ordained a bishop on March 20, 2017. As Auxiliary Bishop he served the Archdiocese of San Antonio as Moderator of the Curia and Vicar General and became a respected retreat leader and parish mission speaker.
After nearly five decades of priestly ministry, Pope Leo XIV accepted his resignation as Auxiliary Bishop on September 8, 2025, following his attainment of the mandatory retirement age. Following his retirement, Bishop Boulette has returned to ministry at St. Peter Upon the Water and continues to accompany the men in formation at Assumption Seminary through spiritual direction.
